Market Research

Overview

What we're doing here is generating lots of ideas for potential niche markets. We're then going to pick a few to look at in more detail and start to analyse their worth. If your initial ideas don't pan out then just pick some more!

Training

You may need to login to the Thirty Day Challenge site to see the training or have it automatically download into iTunes.

Actions

Remember to watch the training videos and/or listen to the training podcasts first before diving in with these actions!

  1. Surf the Internet for more ideas as shown in the videos.
  2. Choose 7 ideas that most appeal to you (avoid "Major-League" niche areas).
  3. For each of your 7 topics, enter these into WordTracker. Note the total number of searches (at the bottom), copy and paste the whole list into a text editor and save the file on your computer.
  4. Enter your 7 main phrases into Google and check within the paid adverts that there are real people selling real products into this market.
  5. Use Google to "notice" whether there are any affiliate programs for related products or services.
  6. Use Google Trends to "notice" general trends for each topic, especially any seasonal variations and whether it is currently "in season".
  7. Using your intuition, choose the top 2 topics that you feel are standing up the best.
  8. Start to analyse your chosen topics in more detail and find an "Umbrella Phrase". Ideally...
    • WordTracker should show 80 - 100 or more searches for the Umbrella Phrase alone
    • In Google, your phrase-matched (in quotes) "Umbrella Phrase" should find no more than 25,000 to 30,000 matched sites
  9. If your main topic does not meet the criteria, work down the list of WordTracker results and try a more specialised phrase, e.g. "speed reading free" instead of "speed reading". Sometimes you need to dig deep within the results.
  10. Compare your quoted "Umbrella Phrase" with a known #1 listing (e.g. male yeast infection) in Google Trends to get a more accurate estimate of search traffic in Google. This needs to be 50 - 100 or more though a lower number of searches could still work.
  11. Optionally, check whether there are already any competing Web 2.0 sites listed in Google for your Umbrella Phrase.
  12. If your chosen niches get eliminated then go back and find some more!
  13. Once you have a niche you might run with, do a Google News search for the Umbrella Phrase and/or a more generalised phrase and add the feed to Bloglines in a new folder named after the niche.
  14. Also use Google Blog Search on your keyword phrases and add those feeds to Bloglines.
  15. Start using the Golden Nuggets technique to take notes on your chosen topic. Write down any 'wow' fact you find. Use Google search results and also look for online groups and communities such as these (use a throwaway email address):

Notes

You should carry a small "Ideas" notebook with you wherever you go but you may want to consider putting all your niche topic ideas into a spreadsheet. This will allow you to add further notes and analysis information such as whether the topic is a go or not.

A great way to do this is using Google Docs so that you can access your spreadsheet from any computer anywhere!

Testing Your Niche

Test Metric Explanation
WordTracker Daily Searches for Umbrella Keyword Alone Min 50 - 100 We want about 200 clicks for 1 sale to make our $10 so if 50 searches with a #1 listing in Google results in 50 clicks then it will take 4 days. 100 searches = 2 days, etc.
WordTracker Total Daily Searches for Umbrella Keyword (100 - 1000) No real minimum but the best Umbrella keywords will have many related long tail keywords with a high total.
Google Search Phrase Match Count Max 25,000 - 30,000 We need to aim for the #1 slot in Google as quickly as possible and too much competition will make this too difficult.
Google Trends Daily Searches Min 50 - 100 Results for your Umbrella Keyword phrase should verify the WordTracker results.
Google Ad Competition Yes / No You need to see paid adverts from people selling products or services to your niche.
Affiliates Yes / No Ideally, there should be affiliate programmes related to your niche to allow for easy revenue generation.
Google Web 2.0 Listings No / Yes We don't really want to see any competing natural search listings from Web 2.0 sites.
